The United States suspended intelligence sharing with Ukraine, a move that could significantly limit the Ukrainian military's ability to target Russian forces, according to officials and reports from multiple media outlets. The decision marked a notable shift in US support during the ongoing war and came amid a sharp deterioration in relations between Washington and Kyiv.
The pause in intelligence cooperation was confirmed by CIA Director John Ratcliffe during an interview on Fox Business on the morning of March 5, 2025. Ratcliffe stated that President Trump had ordered the suspension after questioning whether Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was genuinely committed to pursuing peace negotiations.
US intelligence support has played a significant role in Ukraine's military operations since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. Shared intelligence has helped Ukrainian forces track Russian troop movements, identify strategic targets, and coordinate battlefield operations, including long-range strikes inside Russian territory.
According to Al Jazeera, the halt could severely restrict Ukraine's ability to conduct strikes against Russian forces. Intelligence provided by the United States has been a central component of Ukraine's battlefield awareness throughout the conflict.
One source close to the Ukrainian government told Axios that the intelligence-sharing pause became a decisive factor in shaping Zelenskyy's response to the diplomatic dispute with the Trump administration. According to the source, the suspension contributed directly to Zelenskyy issuing a public statement expressing regret over the confrontation and committing to pursue peace efforts.
The suspension does not apply to all categories of intelligence support. A US official cited by Bloomberg said the halt covered most intelligence cooperation but excluded information required for Ukrainian forces to protect themselves from imminent threats. This exception allows Ukraine to continue receiving certain defensive intelligence, including data on incoming Russian strikes.
The White House signalled that the suspension would remain in place until diplomatic progress was achieved. US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz confirmed that both weapons deliveries and intelligence sharing would remain paused until a date for peace talks with Russia had been established.
The decision represented a significant development in US involvement in the conflict. Since the start of the war, the United States had provided Ukraine with military assistance, intelligence support, and diplomatic backing in response to Russia's invasion — support that officials now described as contingent on Ukraine's engagement in peace negotiations.
Intelligence sharing has been particularly important for Ukraine's ability to conduct long-range operations and precision strikes against Russian positions. US satellite surveillance and intelligence assessments have helped Ukrainian commanders plan operations and monitor battlefield developments throughout the war.
