British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has confirmed to parliament that his government will allow the United States to use UK military bases for strikes against Iranian missile sites Starmer described the decision as a “defensive” measure, adding that France and Germany are also prepared to grant similar permissions
The announcement comes amid a sharp escalation in the Middle East conflict. On Monday, a suspected Iranian drone attacked the United Kingdom’s RAF Akrotiri base in southern Cyprus, causing limited damage but no casualties Hours later, two additional drones targeting the base were intercepted, according to Cypriot officials
The UK’s justification of its involvement as “defensive” contrasts with the more aggressive rhetoric from its American allies. US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth recently stated that while Washington did not initiate the war with Iran, under President Donald Trump, “we’re finishing it” Starmer's government has sought to frame its cooperation as a specific and limited action necessary for the collective self-defence of allies and British nationals in the region. This strategic positioning allows the UK to provide critical logistical support to the US campaign while attempting to create political and legal distance from the wider offensive operations.
