ANKARA – Turkey's government announced on Thursday that it is "closely following" the actions of the Iranian Kurdish militant group PJAK, stating the group's activities threaten both Iran's security and regional stability The statement comes amid reports that the United States has consulted with various Iranian Kurdish groups about potential military action inside Iran
According to sources cited by Reuters, these discussions focused on whether, and how, the militias could attack Iran's security forces in the western part of the country This reported engagement is taking place within the broader context of military action by the United States and Israel against Iran
As a NATO member and a direct neighbor to Iran, Turkey's position is critical. Ankara is unlikely to support any collaboration between Washington and Iranian Kurdish militias, particularly given PJAK's affiliation with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) Turkey, along with the US and EU, designates the PKK as a terrorist organization and is currently working to secure a peace deal with the Iraq-based group The Turkish government has also backed the integration of Syrian Kurdish militants into Syria's state systems, signaling a preference for established political structures over empowering non-state actors Any US support for groups linked to the PKK is a significant national security concern for Ankara, potentially straining relations within the NATO alliance.
