The Pakistan Navy has launched "Operation Muhafiz-ul-Bahr" to safeguard the country's shipping and maritime trade in response to an "evolving regional maritime security environment" The military's media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), announced the operation on Monday, stating the initiative is designed to counter "multidimensional threats" and ensure the security of vital Sea Lines of Communication (SLOCs)
The primary objective is to guarantee the uninterrupted flow of national energy supplies and other critical goods This operation underscores the strategic importance of maritime security for Pakistan, as approximately 90% of the nation's trade is conducted by sea, making these routes essential for economic stability According to the ISPR, the Pakistan Navy is "fully cognisant of the prevailing maritime situation" and is actively monitoring commercial vessel movements to ensure their safety
As part of the operation, Pakistan Navy vessels are actively escorting Pakistani merchant ships through critical sea lanes These missions are being conducted in close coordination with the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) to ensure the "safe and secure transit" of the vessels This proactive naval deployment demonstrates Pakistan's commitment to protecting its core economic interests against potential maritime disruptions stemming from regional instability
