Pakistan's government has deployed the military and imposed a three-day curfew in parts of the northern Gilgit-Baltistan region after violent protests erupted across the country on Sunday The demonstrations followed the confirmed killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in a joint US-Israeli attack on Saturday
At least 24 people have been killed and dozens more injured in clashes between demonstrators and security forces, prompting authorities to tighten security at the US embassy and consulates The protests, largely led by members of Pakistan’s Shia Muslim community, turned deadly in several major cities According to one report, fatalities included 10 people in the port city of Karachi, at least eight in Skardu, and two in the capital, Islamabad Security forces reportedly fired tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters as demonstrations escalated
The government response includes the deployment of troops and a three-day curfew in some areas of Gilgit-Baltistan to restore order following the deadly violence
