Moscow and Tehran have signaled a mutual interest in de-escalating tensions surrounding Iran's nuclear program This diplomatic push follows Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei's emphatic defense of the nation’s uranium enrichment activities as vital for its independence and peaceful atomic industry

In Moscow, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov and Iranian Ambassador Kazem Jalali met to discuss concerns over Tehran’s nuclear aspirations. The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that both parties "expressed their mutual interest in preventing further tensions, fuelled by various speculations about alleged threats related to Iran’s peaceful nuclear program"

Concurrently, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei articulated a robust defense of Iran’s uranium enrichment program, asserting its indispensability for the nation’s sovereignty and the comprehensive viability of its atomic sector Khamenei argued that "The atom industry is useless without the ability to enrich uranium. In that case, we would have to beg for help in building nuclear power plants. It's like having oil but not being able to process it on your own territory. You have oil, but you have to buy gasoline from others" He emphasized that enrichment is a fundamental sovereign right essential for self-sufficiency

This convergence of Russia and Iran in expressing a desire to temper tensions, while Iran simultaneously champions the non-negotiable nature of its enrichment program, presents a complex diplomatic challenge. The core issue of Iran's enrichment levels and capacities remains a fundamental point of significant international contention, driving "various speculations about alleged threats" despite Tehran’s consistent denials and assertions of a purely peaceful program.
