The John Lewis Partnership announced in March 2026 the return of its annual staff bonus for the first time in four years, a significant milestone in its ongoing turnaround strategy. Approximately 65,000 employees, known as 'Partners,' will receive a bonus of 2% of their salary, equivalent to about one week's pay. The decision follows a period of improved financial performance, with underlying profits rising 6% to £134 million and partnership sales increasing by 5% to £13.4 billion for the financial year ending January 31, 2026.

The reinstatement of the bonus is a symbolic move for the employee-owned business, which was forced to suspend the payout amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and a difficult retail environment. Under the leadership of Chairman Jason Tarry, the company has refocused on its core retail operations at John Lewis department stores and Waitrose supermarkets. This strategy includes significant investment in stores and technology while abandoning previous diversification plans, such as building rental properties.

Despite the positive underlying performance, the Partnership reported a pre-tax loss of £21 million for the year. This loss was attributed to £120 million in exceptional charges, mainly for writing down the value of legacy technology systems, and £53 million in new taxes, including higher National Insurance contributions. Waitrose was a strong performer, with sales growing 7% to £8.5 billion, while John Lewis sales saw a 3% increase to £4.9 billion.

Looking ahead, the Partnership remains cautious, citing a subdued market and fragile consumer sentiment. However, leadership expressed confidence in its retail-first strategy and transformation plan. The company will continue to invest in its stores, staff pay, and efficiency measures as it navigates the challenging economic landscape.
